Developmental Education courses are pre-college courses designed to provide students with the basic skills needed to achieve success in college-level courses and to pass the TSI (Texas Success Initiative). Therefore, although a student receives credit for satisfactorily completing Developmental courses, DE credit does not transfer nor does it count toward a degree or certificate. Developmental courses are offered in mathematics, reading, and writing. These courses are designed to help students gain the skills and confidence needed to successfully complete college-level courses. The instructional formats vary and include computer-based, lecture, online and self-paced. If basic skills assessment scores indicate that a student would be better prepared by taking a developmental education course prior to enrolling in a college-level class, the student must enroll in the developmental course. Developmental courses may be taken for a combined total of no more than 27 hours.
Students may be eligible to take certain developmental mathematics courses in three 5-week blocks at the Preston Ridge Campus. Please contact Katerina Vishnyakova at the Preston Ridge Campus in room D122 (972.377.1532) for details.
Home School or High School students are not permitted to enroll in developmental education courses.
College Success
A three-credit hour course is available for students to enrich their development in study skills, career planning and personal development.
A course in test-taking techniques and study skills for English as a Second Language (ESL) students, designed to help non-native English speaking students, is also available.
Developmental Education also offers free study skills seminars that teach students basic study and test-taking skills to increase college success. A schedule of these free seminars is published each semester and copies are available at the Information Center on each campus. Study Skills courses do not count toward the Developmental Education 27 hour limit. Call the Developmental Education office at 972.881.5720 for additional information.

Strong reading skills are essential for success in college and life in general. In the reading program, students can learn the strategies necessary for understanding and remembering what they read in college textbooks. Reading strategies enable students to take less time to read textbooks and complete assignments.
Reading 0305 and 0310 are also designed to help students pass the reading portion of the TSI test.
