Music Appreciation

Aaron West has been a professional musician since he was fifteen years old. He has performed with jazz and pop legends such as Arturo Sandoval, Brian Wilson, Norah Jones, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He released his first solo album in 2007, titled Colors and Angles. Aside from his performing career, Aaron was the first person to complete a Ph.D. in musicology relating to a jazz subject from the University of North Texas. His dissertation, “Caught Between Jazz and Pop: The Contested Origins, Criticism, Performance Practice, and Reception of Smooth Jazz,” has led to an interest in popular forms of jazz as well as social and canonic issues relating to popular music. Aaron’s most recent publication is Sting and The Police: Walking in Their Footsteps (Rowman and Littlefield), a book on the social and musical influence of popular rock band, The Police. He has taught at Collin College since 2011.
