CAFÉtalks

Collin College Foundation and The Pride, Collin College’s official association for alumni and friends, along with Centennial Medical Center will present CAFÉtalks, a series of presentations to inspire and engage Collin College alumni, students and the community.

CAFÉtalks (Collin Alumni, Friends and Experts) will be held on each of the college’s main campuses throughout the 2014-2015 academic year. Topics and speakers will vary, offering guests an opportunity to interact with each other and experts.

CAFÉtalks will be similar to the popular TED talks, and each session will be recorded and will be made available through the Collin College Foundation website. All sessions are free and open to the public.

The first session scheduled for Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. at the Central Park Campus Conference Room in McKinney will feature Collin professor and author Ceilidh Charleson-Jennings. She will share her unique experiences living and working with her trained search and rescue dog Puzzle--the subject of her New York Times best-selling book Scent of the Missing.

The second session scheduled for Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. at the Spring Creek Campus Living Legends Conference Room in Plano will feature Collin professor and author Dr. Kyle Wilkison. Click here for more details.

Scholarship Awards

Texas Health Presby PlanoOn August 7, Collin College and the Collin College Foundation with presenting sponsor Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano hosted the Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony and President’s Circle Reception.

The event offers donors and scholarship recipients an opportunity to meet each other, and this year the event recognized more than 500 Collin College Foundation scholarship recipients and their donors.

"The event has grown so much because of the generosity of our donors that for the 2015 reception, we will have to look for another location," said Amy Evans, executive director of the Collin College Foundation. Possible future venues may include the Allen Event Center, Dr. Pepper Starcenter or the Plano Centre.

Throughout the years that the foundation has hosted the event, feedback from both donors and recipients has been overwhelmingly positive. As one donor recently said, "I don't want to give my money to an organization and not know that it makes a difference. I like having the opportunity to get to know who I'm helping and knowing the impact of my giving."

Just for You

The annual gift tax exclusion is the amount that is annually exempted from federal gift taxes. The amount was indexed for inflation beginning in 1997 and has been slowly increasing since then. The amount in 2014 was $14,000, and it is expected to remain the same for 2015, but it can be leveraged to add up and couples can each give separately.

In addition the estate and gift tax applicable exclusion is expected to increase from $5.34 million to $5.43 million in 2014 according to Wolters Kluwer, CCH.The projected figures are based on the inflation-adjustment provisions of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) as currently in force.

The Internal Revenue Service will release the official figures in the fall, but this Forbes article offers some practical examples of how these limits on tax-free lifetime gifts can be used to your advantage.
