CCCCD Co-Sponsors Deaf Culture Workshop

August 6, 2001 - Collin County Community College District will co-sponsor "Reading Between The Signs: An Exploration Of Deaf Culture" August 18 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The all-day workshop on American Deaf culture will be held at the Education Service Center/Region 10, 400 E. Spring Valley in Richardson. Interpreters will be provided. Additional sponsors include the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (Region IV Interpreter Education Project) and the Deaf Action Center in Dallas.

Anna Mindess, interpreter, lecturer and author of "Reading Between The Signs" and Priscilla Moyers, intermediary legal interpreter and contributor to "Reading Between The Signs" will present this workshop. The presentation will describe the features of American Deaf culture and focus on key distinctions between mainstream American culture and American Deaf culture. Participants will become aware of their own cultural biases and behaviors as Mindess and Moyers demonstrate how 'politeness' and 'rudeness' are culturally relative terms. The workshop will also tackle the question of how members of two different cultures can negotiate a mutually respectful and satisfying relationship.

The workshop is geared to general and Deaf education instructors, interpreters, American Sign Language instructors, Regional Day School Program for Deaf (RDSPD) supervisors, students in Deaf education teacher training and interpreter programs, parents of Deaf children and members of the Deaf community. Also open to the general public, the workshop is partially funded by a grant from the Rehabilitation Services Administration and co-sponsored by CCCCD in cooperation with the Educational Service Center-Region 10. The workshop fee is $25. The workshop provides continuing education credits for Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing/Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (TCDHH) and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
