Congressman Visits Fire Academy

October 2, 2001--United States Congressman Sam Johnson, whose federal district includes all of Plano and parts of Richardson, Allen and McKinney, addressed fire academy students and toured the fire-rescue complex at Collin County Community College District on Thursday, September 27.

Representative Johnson wanted to acknowledge the fund raising efforts of fire class number 21 and recognize the efforts of all firefighters who put their lives on the line every day. After a brief speech and the “Pledge of Allegiance,” the Vietnam veteran shook hands with each and every one of the members of class 21, thanking them for their service to the country and to the community.

As a show of support for their lost comrades, students in CCCCD’s Fire Academy class number 21 have established a fund to assist the families of the fallen New York firefighters. Contributions can be made at any Bank of America branch and directed to the FDNY 911 fund. The class is also taking donations at area Wal-Marts. So far, class number 21 has raised more than $34,000.

Academy students Mike Hoff (Frisco) and Chad Husbands (Whitesboro resident, McKinney firefighter) led the organization of the fund.

“This is a whole class effort," said Hoff. "We have been collecting during the weekends as well as in-between classes.”

“We want people to know this will be given to the fire department union," added his classmate, Chad Husbands. "It will go to the cause that it was meant for."
