Girl Scouts Donate Books To CCCCD

NOV. 20, 2001-Girl Scouts from Troop 354 donated more than 200 books to Collin County Community College District's (CCCCD) Spring Creek Campus Child Development Lab School (CDLS).

The Girl Scouts from Plano Troop 354 opened their service project to Service Unit 153, allowing numerous Girl Scouts and their families to donate books. Under the guidance of leaders Allison Despain (Murphy) and Pam Karon (Richardson), Troop 354 members Ursula Karon (Richardson), Amanda Despain (Murphy), Katie Young (Parker), Whitney Boyer (Richardson), Megan Knapp (Richardson), Amanda POE (Richardson), Ashley Elkins (Murphy), Megan Christensen (Richardson), Gabby Calhoun (Plano), Cynthia Whitt (Garland) and Sarah Allen (Richardson) collected, sorted and delivered the books. But the part of the service project they enjoyed the most was reading to and visiting with the children.

"Our troop is trying to earn our Silver Award. We are interested in doing things that have to do with children, and we wanted to help somebody," said Amanda Despain.

According to Janet Galantay, CCCCD Spring Creek Campus director of the Child Development Lab School, the Girl Scouts achieved their goal and provided books for 30 children at the college's Spring Creek Campus.

"This says what the community in community college is. It gives us a connection with the community to have them come and recognize us with their service projects. The books will be greatly appreciated," said Galantay.

CCCCD has two Child Development Lab Schools, located at Spring Creek Campus in Plano and Central Park Campus in McKinney. The lab schools serve as an observation and learning site for the college's students. This semester, 80 child development students from the college are completing their labs, while 30 children are enrolled at the Spring Creek Campus Child Development Lab School. To keep a very low student-teacher ratio, the lab school only accepts a small number of children.
