CCCCD Radio Club Assists In Interstate Bike Tour

MAY 7, 2002 - The Collin County Community College District ham radio station served as a net control station to assist bike riders with emergency situations in the recent MS150 Red River Challenge Bike Tour. CCCCD radio club members and area ham radio operators volunteered at the emergency communications hub while participants cycled from Frisco, Texas, to Ardmore, Oklahoma.

The volunteer radio operators help keep cyclists on the correct path, provide communication services for logistical support, including food and water, and are able to communicate with the appropriate person at the appropriate location in case of an emergency situation. The CCCCD net control station volunteers used an Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) to track the tour on the computer.

"This is a global positioning system with tracker transmitters which allows us to see on the computer where they are at all times," said Paul Vizard, ham radio volunteer from Plano.
