CCCCD Announces Electronic Design Contest Winners

MAY 16, 2002 - Approximately 40 students participated in the 2002 Collin County Community College District Electronic Design Competition, held at the Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Blvd., in Frisco. The event was sponsored by STMicroelectronics, Communication Workers of America Local 6210-Southwestern Bell Union, PJs Campus Books of Plano and Texas Instruments.

The Golden Apple Award for contributions outside the college was presented to Ezra Penermon of Texas Instruments. Lori Hoxie of Plano received the Shawn Ray Outstanding Student Award given to students who have overcome insurmountable odds. The best overall award and the first place winners for the microprocessor category were Jarrod Greer and George Missirlis of Plano. Second place microprocessor winners were Andrew July (Plano) and Thomas Litteral (Lowry Crossing). The first place winners in the DC power supply category were Merrill King (Mesquite), Gerry Moore (Dallas) and Demarco Dinwinddie (Euless). Second place winners in the DC power supply category were Doug Byrd (Sachse) and Brandon Beadle (Dallas). The first place winners for the function generator category were Lorie Hoxie and Peggy Kemper-Sears of Plano. Second place winners in the function generator category were Tameka Moon (Dallas) and Leslie Smith (Arlington).

Each of the teams designed, produced and "marketed" their products to the contest judges. Participants were judged on functionality, complexity, presentation and documentation and overall category representation.

Judges included Wayne Jones, CCCCD professor of engineering technology, Mitty Plummer, professor of nuclear engineering at the University of North Texas, David Hendry, professor of electronics at North Central Texas College and Helen Sullivan, director of the National Science Foundation Advancing Careers in Technology and Science (ACTS) project.

Participants under the guidance of professor Joe Hackney included Jody Clark (Allen), Ken Richardson (Allen), Chris Hampton (Dallas), Joe Holloway (Plano), Cornelia Huellstrunk (Dallas), Jarrod Greer (Plano) and George Missirlis (Plano).

Participants under the guidance of professor Charles Rowley included David Darrow (Plano), Kouresh Oufi (Plano), Andrew July (Plano), Thomas Litteral (Lowry Crossing), Vesta Medina (Frisco) and Robinson Chege (Dallas).

Participants under the guidance of professor Bob Meeks included Joe Holloway (Plano), Brent Vardeman (Plano), Chris Hampton (Dallas), Kettchi Stevens (Plano), John Wheeler (Wylie), Lori Hoxie (Plano), Peggy Kemper-Sears (Plano), Doug Byrd (Sachse), Brandon Beadle (Dallas), Kathy Mitchell (McKinney), Peter Fraser (Little Elm) and Cole Nguyen (McKinney).

Participants under the guidance of professor Tom Mobley included Merrill King (Mesquite), Gerry Moore (Dallas), Demarco Dinwinddie (Euless), Josen George (Coppell), Vasudevan Krishnan (Carrollton), Tameka Moon (Dallas), Leslie Smith (Arlington), Brent House (Flower Mound) and Tony Aguilera (Irving).

Participants under the guidance of professor John Wilkins included Yoko Fujimaru (Plano), Juan Cura (The Colony), Raymond Mendoza (Blue Ridge), Robert Holmes (Lucas), Minh Lam (Garland) and Allen Williams (Allen).
