CCCCD Tech Camp Graduates Record Number Of FCC Licensed Students

SEPTEMBER 27, 2002 - A closing ceremony was held recently for Tech Camp 2002 students at Collin County Community College District's Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco.

A total of 53 students graduated from Tech Camp 2002, a wireless camp for students in grades 7- 10 and funded by National Science Foundation, the Brandenburg Life Foundation, Texas Instruments, Nortel Networks, Ericsson and CCCCD. A total of 47 students achieved FCC licenses during the camp.

The camp is designed to bring math and science skills to life through high-tech games. CCCCD engineering technology professors taught campers orienteering (the use of map and compass skills), radio direction finding, radio propagation and antenna characteristics

Dr. Toni Jenkins, CCCCD executive vice president, delivered opening remarks at the Tech Camp 2002 graduation ceremony. Executive Director/Dean of Engineering Technology Ann Beheler presented student mentor awards to McKinney residents Ben Fant and Charlie Weinberger, Celina resident Mike Swan and Plano residents David Darrow, Sara Libby, Yike Lu and Neel Parekh. These former Tech Camp graduates volunteered time to assist new students.

Professors of Engineering Technology Jeff Fant and Tom Mobley, Mary Jo Peterman, ACTS (Advancing Careers in Technology and Science)/National Science Foundation project manager and Helen Sullivan, CCCCD director of technical career development, presented certificates of completion to the graduates and recognition certificates to key volunteers and staff. During the camp, many students earned their FCC Technician Class License or upgraded to an advanced license. Listed below are graduates of Tech Camp 2002 by city:
