CCCCD Students Place In National Writing Competition

OCTOBER 8 , 2002 - Five students from the Collin County Community College District have won financial scholarships from a national writing competition. According to sponsors of the 2001-2002 Townsend Scholarship Contest for Developmental Reading and Writing Students, the student-authors addressed the topic "Taking Charge of My Life" and illustrated the challenges they overcame to become college students. The five winners, all Plano residents, include Crystal Brewer, Inessa Chukhman, Lashaun Nicole Edwards, Shelia English and Melinda Truc Ahn Truong.

The contest's sponsor, Townsend Press, publishes vocabulary, reading and writing textbooks, plus a variety of other print materials, for a market of developmental education students in secondary schools and colleges (www.townsendpress.com). This is the tenth year that Townsend Press has sponsored its annual scholarship contest. They receive approximately 600 entries per year and have given away over $300,000 in scholarship money to students around the country.

Laura Foster-Eason, professor of developmental writing at CCCCD, has warm feelings about her students. All five of the contest winners were in her class. An Allen resident, she has been teaching at the college since 1992 and currently serves as coordinator of the developmental writing program.

"Over the years our students at CCCCD have had a lot of collective success with the Townsend contest," said Foster-Eason. "We take great pride in their accomplishments because, generally speaking, when students are placed into developmental English courses they are striving to overcome writing difficulties. So by winning this contest, they're demonstrating extraordinary progress."

The Collin County Community College District serves more than 37,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs in a wide range of disciplines. In addition, CCCCD partners with business, government and industry, to provide customized training and workforce development.
