CCCCD Learning Community Blends Culture And Language

November 15, 2002 - The latest demographic figures from the cities of Plano and McKinney indicate that the Hispanic population is the second fastest growing minority group in Collin County, representing more than 10% of Plano residents and 18% of McKinney residents. In a proactive move, Collin County Community College District's award winning Learning Communities program is introducing a new Spanish/Humanities Learning Community class for the spring 2003 semester. This unique class will blend the teaching of the language with an understanding of the Hispanic/Latino culture.

The class will be team-taught by a humanities professor and a Spanish professor. While one will focus on learning the mechanics of the language, both will address the roles that culture and ethnicity play in creating identity.

"We created the class because of a shared enthusiasm for the Spanish language and culture and because of a shared vision of the symbiotic relationship between language and culture," explained Carolyn Perry, professor of humanities. "The ability to speak another language removes the most important censors, the internal ones. There may be thoughts we cannot think, for example, simply because we do not have words for them in our native language. Translation is never perfect; it is an approximation. In a sense, we really can't speak the language until we know the culture, and we can't really know the culture until we speak the language."

Students will also be exposed to the many Hispanic cultural offerings available in our community including traditional dance, theater and cuisine.

Additional Learning Community classes offered for spring 2003 include: "The Way We Are: Exploring Issues in U.S. History - Conflict and Resolution," "The Wrong Stuff: The Societal and Political Contexts of Crime and Deviance," "Nutrition, Strength, and Fitness," "Social Problems and Public Policy in the Twenty-First Century," "Idealism: Where Culture and Writing Meet," "Human Rights and Social Action: Can We really Make a Difference?" and "Minority Experiences in America: Patterns of Domination, Acceptance, Resistance, and Change."
