CCCCD Announces Electronic Design Contest Winners

May 9, 2003 - More than 50 students participated in the 2003 Collin County Community College District Electronic Design Competition, held at the Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Blvd., in Frisco.

The Golden Apple Award for contributions outside the college was presented to Glenn Wintrich of EDS. Steve Swan (Celina) received the Shawn Ray Outstanding Student Award, given to students who have overcome insurmountable odds.

This year the college awarded scholarships to the first place winners in each category. The best overall award and the first place winners for the waveform generator category were Man-yan Mark Hui (McKinney) and Jun Wu (Plano). Traver Cozad (Van Alstyne) took second place in the waveform generator category. James Ou (McKinney) and Eduardo J. Rengel (Frisco) took third place.

The first place winners in the DC power supply category were James Wang (Plano) and Prashanth Thekkalore (Plano). Man-yan Mark Hui took second place. Kathy J. Mitchell (McKinney), Stephen Howard (The Colony) and Alan Robb (Lewisville) took third place.

The first place winners for the microprocessor category were Kevin Krantz (Plano), Getenet Gebermariam (Allen), Ernest Reed (Plano) and Raymond Reney (Plano). Charlie Corvaia (Frisco), Neal Rodgers (Frisco) and William Fulk (Plano) took second place. Jerry Collins (Allen) and Chad Rector (Caddo Mills) took third place.

Each of the teams designed, produced and "marketed" their products to the contest judges. Participants were judged on functionality, complexity, presentation and documentation and overall category representation. Judges included Rad Field, retired Boeing engineer; Dale Sanders, North Central Texas College coordinator/professor of the Electronics Engineering Technology Department; Vijay Vaidyanathan, UNT assistant professor and director of Electronic Engineering Technology and Helen Sullivan, director of the North Texas Regional Technical Consortium.
