PTK Scholars Receive Awards

May 16, 2003 - Four students from Collin County Community College have won scholarships to continue their academic careers at two local universities. Jon Albiola, Jennifer Flusche, and Trevor Hall have been awarded money to attend the University of Texas at Dallas; and Lana Waltrip has been awarded money to attend Texas Woman's University. These scholarships, totaling $12,000, will help each student cover tuition, room and board. The scholarships were announced last month at PTK's national convention in Anaheim, California.

All four--Albiola of Plano, and Flusche, Hall and Waltrip of McKinney--currently serve as officers in Alpha Mu Tau, CCCCD's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year college students.

Jon Albiola plans to major in engineering; Jennifer Flusche will be majoring in education, teaching and coaching; Trevor Hall in business marketing and management; and Lana Waltrip will major in anthropology or photography. All will be entering their respective schools as juniors.

In addition to receiving scholarships, Trevor Hall and Lana Waltrip have also been named to the 2003 Texas All-State Academic Team. They will receive medals and certificates for this distinction, and will have their photos published on a national website.

"I was thrilled to have received a transfer scholarship to TWU," said Lana Waltrip, CCCCD chapter president. "This was truly an honor. I am a non-traditional student, returning to college after graduating from high school over 30 years ago. I hope that my participation in student organizations, and my leadership on campus, will inspire other returning students to become more engaged in campus activities."
