CCCCD Offers Echocardiogram Classes

November 24, 2003 - To better serve the local medical community and its patients, CCCCD Continuing Education and Medical Center of Plano have joined together to create a new class, "Echocardiogram Technician Training" and its accompanying "Echocardiogram Lab." This class-lab combination requires nearly 300 hours of technical training, and both must be taken concurrently. Class and lab will be offered during the spring 2004 semester for the very first time, three nights a week, beginning Jan. 6 and ending Aug. 18. The lecture portion of the class, "Echocardiogram Technician Training," meets at CCCCD's Courtyard Center for Professional and Economic Development, 4800 Preston Park Blvd., and the once weekly lab class, "Echocardiogram Lab," will take place at Medical Center of Plano, 3901 West 15th Street. Both locations are in southwest Plano.

This pair of classes prepares students to understand the basics of taking echocardiograms--ultrasound images of the heart. Students will learn the anatomy of the heart, perform a diagnostic study of that essential organ, gain a basic understanding of ultrasound physics, and learn how to analyze different data driven from the echocardiogram. The aim is to diagnose and prevent heart disease.

"With the increased interest in the healthcare field and opportunities by many in re-careering, we saw the field of Echocardiology as a viable job market in the area." said Jim Merritt, continuing education program director. "By establishing a relationship with Medical Center of Plano, we have access to highly qualified personnel and on-site lab practice with the latest echocardiogram equipment."

Collin County Community College District nearly 40,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs in a wide range of disciplines. In addition, the CCCCD is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
