College Offers Class On How To Install Home Or Small Business Network

December 15, 2003 - This spring, CCCCD will be offering a class to interested individuals and small-business owners on how to build wireless networks in their homes or offices. The class, "Personal and Small Business Connectivity," will take place from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., on Saturday March 27, at the Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Boulevard, in Frisco.

This one-day course covers basic information needed to connect personal computers, printers, scanners and many other peripherals to wireless hubs in a small business or home setting. Rather than discussing broad topics, the class will instead build a demonstration network as an example of how to bring disparate hardware and software components together. The curriculum covers basic networking, wireless tips, security and troubleshooting. Students need only a textbook to enroll. No prerequisites are required.

"Small networks are not yet off-the-shelf commodities, packaged so that they perform right out of the box," said Ann Beheler, dean of engineering technology. "Installing a small, wireless LAN requires knowledge of what hardware and software to buy and how to configure all parts to accomplish the speed, reach and security desired."
