CCCCD And SMU Offer Dual Admission Option In School Of Engineering

April 2, 2004 - CCCCD and the Southern Methodist University (SMU) School of Engineering have created a dual admission agreement specifically for engineering students. The CCCCD-SMU Cooperative Program in Engineering allows students to be enrolled at both schools simultaneously while taking classes at the CCCCD campus.

"This is a fabulous opportunity for our engineering students to complete their work here while gaining valuable exposure and linkages to SMU's outstanding engineering faculty, advisors, and students," said Ann Beheler, dean of engineering and technology.

Representatives from the admissions staff, academic advisors and engineering faculty of both schools will select applicants and provide advising prior to the students entering the program. For a student to be eligible to participate in the program, they must be enrolled full-time at CCCCD (minimum 12 semester hours) and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 in transferable hours, if they have less than 30 semester credit hours. For students with more than 30 semester credit hours, they must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.7 in transferable hours.

"Community colleges will play an increasingly important role in educating the next generation of engineers. We at the SMU School of Engineering believe that our agreement with CCCCD will increase the access to a world-class engineering education for a much broader cross section of students," said Geoffrey Orsak, incoming SMU School of Engineering Dean.

Benefits given to students in the SMU-CCCCD cooperative program include the rights and privileges of a regular full-time SMU student in addition to the rights and privileges of CCCCD engineering students. Students who successfully complete the program according to the specified guidelines will receive automatic admission to SMU's School of Engineering and are allowed to reverse transfer courses taken at SMU back to CCCCD to complete the associate of science degree in engineering, provided that 25 percent of their coursework for their CCCCD degree is done at CCCCD.
