Sail The Summer For Free And Enrich Your Life

May 28, 2004 - CCCCD sponsored Seniors Active In Learning (SAIL) brings a variety of free learning activities to the community for the summer. All classes will meet at the Courtyard Center for Professional and Economic Development, 4800 Preston Park Blvd. in Plano.

The following activities will be offered:

Drawing Class (room A232) Mondays, June 7 - July 26, 11 a.m. - 1 pm. This self-directed group of art students encourages each other. Bring your sketchpad, pencils and pens and join the fun.

Book Discussion Group (room A216) Mondays, June 7 and 28; July 19, 1:30 - 3 p.m. The first book will be The Quilter's Apprentice by Jennifer Chiaverini. Be ready to discuss the book on the first class session. Subsequent books will be chosen at that time.

Bridge (room A212) Tuesdays, June 1 - July 20, 9 - 11 a.m. Teams will play American Standard Bridge. Beginning Bridge class or recent bridge experience is required.

Digital Photography (room TBA) Tuesdays, June 8 - 29, 10 a.m. - Noon. Bring your digital camera and get hands-on experience. John Byers will be the instructor.

Tuesday Afternoon at the Movies (student lunchroom on the second floor) Tuesdays, June 8 - July 6, 12:15 - 4 p.m. Start off with lunch in the student lunchroom, then watch classic "made in Texas" movies. Titles may include Tender Mercies, Lone Star, The Rookie, Second Hand Lions, The Trip to Bountiful and Giant.

Wildflowers of Texas (room A222) Wednesday, June 2, 10 - 11:30 a.m. Presented by John and Wanda Rubrecht, view a slideshow and presentation of helpful guidebooks and maps featuring one- and two-day drive trips to see wildflowers "in season."

Questions in Search of History (room A232) Wednesdays, June 9 - July 7, 10 a.m. - Noon. Dr. Simon Lane will discuss events in history that, to this day, are surrounded with controversy or are not publicly well known. Topics covered will include The Bible Code, the plot to overthrow FDR, the sinking of the Lusitania, the Rohna Disaster and Berga.

Brown Bag Lunch Series (Frisco Senior Center) Thursdays, June 17; July 15 and Aug. 19, Noon - 2 p.m. Bring a sack lunch and a friend to enjoy informative speakers. The Senior Center is located at 6670 Moore St. in Frisco.

Celestin's Café (room A232) Thursdays, June 3 - Aug. 26, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Led by Les Lorenzo, this class is structured like Athens 2500 years ago when Socrates, Sophists and the general populace met to discuss events of the day on every topic under the sun. Some sessions will have scheduled topics such as The Da Vinci Code, other sessions will feature ad hoc discussions and student presentations.
