COLLIN OPENS NEW LIBRARY AND CLASSROOM BUILDING AT PRESTON RIDGE CAMPUS IN FRISCO

January 20, 2005 - Collin County Community College District (“Collin”) opened the doors to a new library and classroom building at its Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco. This 103,000 square-foot expansion makes Preston Ridge the second-largest campus in the district, placing it, in terms of square footage, just behind Spring Creek Campus in Plano.

Last week, community leaders and members of the public were treated to a sneak preview of this fantastic new facility, which includes a gleaming, 50,000 square-foot library--five times the size of the current facility. The new library features floor-to-ceiling windows, natural lighting and wide-open areas for seating and shelving. Inspiring views of the campus and grounds are visible from all sides.

The library offers a traditional, two-story reading room with book stacks, cathedral ceilings and a quaint cupola. A digital media workshop features scanners, CD burners, printers and microphones. There is also an assistive-technology room, where students can magnify print books or use a special scanner with software to reads books aloud.

The library will eventually seat 700 individuals and house a collection of 80,000 books, 300 journal subscriptions and 10,000 media items. The media items include 6,000 different videos, audio tapes, CDs, DVDs and software programs.

The building also includes a music hall, many new faculty offices, numerous classrooms with SmartBoards, computer-based math and English labs, a large lecture hall with tiered-seating and a small stage at one end for performances or video screenings, and more.

The new library addition is part of a $57 million bond package passed by Collin County voters in 2001. The cost of this project, including Phase 2 renovation, will be $19.4 million dollars.

Collin College serves more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
