Student Receives Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Scholarship


January 27, 2005 - Collin County Community College District ("Collin") student Michelle Marie Melancon received the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Scholarship, which was established to recognize a student who has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and community involvement.

Melancon is a second-year Collin student and is pursuing a degree in office systems technology. She’s a member of Phi Theta Kappa, National Technology Honor Society and the recipient of the T.J. Johnson Community Scholarship. Melancon also was named to the Dean’s List and is active in the women’s mission at her church.

T.J. Johnson, the community member who nominated Melancon for the scholarship, said that "as a working mom and student, Ms. Melancon has shown herself to be a worthy, capable student." Ms. Melancon herself said that she was "very honored and very grateful" to receive the scholarship.

Collin College serves more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
