CENTRAL PARK CAMPUS OPENS NEW CONSUMER HEALTH INFORMATION CENTER

February 7, 2005 – Current and reliable health and medical information is now at the fingertips of Collin County residents.

The Collin County Community College District (“Collin”) Central Park Campus, 2200 W. University Drive in McKinney, is the site for the new Consumer Health Information Center.

The facility provides up-to-date and reliable medical and healthcare-related data through a number of different resources including books, videos, audio recordings, brochures, medical journals, archived and current magazines and electronic resources.

Reference librarians are on-hand to provide assistance to visitors seeking information on a variety of subjects – like arthritis, pregnancy, exercise, diets and healthcare for the elderly.

The Consumer Health Information Center is not just for students or healthcare professionals, but also for the average consumer wanting to find more information on a medical or health issue. Some resources are available for check-out, such as books and videos. Computer-based information printing and photocopying of reference materials are available at minimal cost. Other resources such as brochures and pamphlets are free.

“In these days of managed healthcare, it is important for the consumer to participate in the medical decisions that impact their well-being,” Learning Resource Center Director Bobbie Long said. “Consumers need to have access to reliable and current information in order to make informed choices.

“At Collin, the Central Park Campus Library supports the college’s Allied Health Science Programs with a wide array of materials. We want to provide the community with the opportunity to utilize the medical and health-related resources in their search for health information,” said Long.

The goals of the facility are to cultivate a better understanding of medical conditions, treatments and procedures; to inform visitors and strengthen their ability to make informed choices regarding medical care through a number of different resources; to build awareness of health information resources in the community; and to collaborate with other local agencies and institutions to achieve shared goals.
