Collin Offers Two New Teacher Certifications

February 15, 2005 -- Collin County Community College District (“Collin”) added to its lineup of teacher certifications.

The State Board of Educator Certification approved Collin to offer new elementary level teacher certifications in English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education.

Each certification program will be offered beginning in the Summer 2005 semester. Deadline for regular registration in these programs is Tuesday, March 1 and late registration ends Friday, March 11.

The two new programs are a result of a high demand in bilingual and English as a second language teachers throughout the state. According to CCCCD Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning and Professional Development Brenda Kihl, 42 percent of emergency teaching permits issued in the last year in Texas were in those two areas.

“The population of English language learners in Collin County is growing rapidly,” Kihl said. “These programs will help school districts meet the ever-increasing need for ESL and bilingual teachers.”

Collin has been preparing teachers for middle school and high school certifications since September 2000.  More than 40 school districts have hired Collin-trained teachers.

Collin College serves more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
