Jane Eyre is an orphaned child cast out by her aunt and sent to a harsh charity school for girls. There, Jane learns to become a teacher. She leaves the school and becomes a housekeeper at a grand estate, where she eventually falls in love with the hall’s master, Edward Rochester. The 1996 film is directed by Franco Zeffirelli, famous for his 1960s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and based on the novel by Charlotte BrÖnte.
