Collin Student Receives Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Gift

July 18, 2005 – For one Collin County Community College District (Collin) student, a scholarship was everything.

Sophomore Valentina Miller, 38, was named a Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation scholarship recipient from Collin and will receive $1,000 in order to pursue her nursing degree.

The Wylie resident works part-time and with her husband raises an 11-year-old daughter. The scholarship was vital toward Miller continuing her higher education.

“This scholarship helps,” Miller said. “I only work part time. I do not know if I could get my degree without the scholarship. I am glad I got it.”

Miller came to the United States three-and-a-half years ago from Russia with limited hold on the English language. Now, she hopes to graduate and become a nurse.

“I am happy,” Miller said. “My friends are so proud of me. People think I am doing a great job for being in the United States for such a short period of time.”

Miller was one of only 400 two-year college students nationwide to receive a scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. The scholarship recognizes academic success and participation in community service within the past year.

Miller was a recipient of a CCCCD Foundation scholarship last year.

Collin College serves more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
