Jazz Festival Features Renowned Trumpeter
February 16, 2006 - A jazz legend will perform at the Collin County Community College District (Collin) 14th annual Jazz Festival.
This year's event will feature jazz trumpet legend Bobby Shew and local jazz drummer Michael Drake Friday-Saturday, March 24-25, at the Spring Creek Campus John Anthony Theatre, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano.
The college's Jaztet One band opens Friday night's show at 8 p.m. followed by jazz faculty joining Shew and Drake. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Shew has performed with a number of jazz legends including Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Oliver Nelson and others. Also, he has recorded for a number of TV shows. His album, "Outstanding in His Field," was nominated for a Grammy in 1980.
During the day Saturday, more than 20 Texas high school bands will perform as part of the festival. These performances are free and open to the public.
The Saturday night Awards Concert will feature the Jazz Lab band and the Texas Instruments Jazz Band performing with Shew. Tickets are $10 at the door.
