College 12th Annual Jazz Camp Hosts Renowned Jazz Artists
July 11, 2006 - Collin County Community College District's Texas All-Star Jazz Camp will welcome two distinguished guests this summer.
Saxophonist Jimmy Heath and pianist Matt Harris are this year's featured guests during the 12th annual camp and will perform during nightly concerts at the Spring Creek Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. Performances are free.
Concerts are at 8 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 17-21, in the John Anthony Theatre. Heath will only perform Tuesday, July 18.
In addition, an opening concert at the Oakpoint Amphitheater across from the Spring Creek Campus is set at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, July 15, featuring Harris and vocalist Rosana Eckert. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $10 for general admission. Tickets are available at the city website.
The Grammy-nominated Heath is a revered jazz instrumentalist performing with the likes of Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis. Heath also has composed many musical works that have been recorded by Cannonball Adderley, Chet Baker, Ray Charles, Dexter Gordon and many others. He has received three Grammy nominations in his career.
Harris is currently the director of jazz studies at California State University-Northridge. He has toured with jazz greats Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich and his arrangements have been recorded, used in films and live productions. His first solo piano album is titled "From the Heart."
