Two Teachers Honored at Collin College Ceremony

May 24, 2007 – The Collin College Teacher Certification program honored two of its students during graduation ceremonies May 17.

Kelly Reichenberger, of Plano, former teaching intern, and Tina Lester, of Little Elm, former student teacher, were given the Awards of Excellence.

The Awards of Excellence are given to one student teacher and one intern each year in recognition of the hard work and personal dedication it takes to be an outstanding teacher. The recipients must have shown their willingness to go above and beyond program expectations -- not only during mentoring, but during all aspects of training.

Lester taught at Calvin Bledsoe Elementary in Frisco. She will teach art at Taylor Elementary in Frisco.

“Art is important to all students because it helps them develop problem-solving skills and creativity. It will help them in all aspects of their education,” Lester said.

Reichenberger had already received her bachelor of arts in psychology and pre-medicine from Notre Dame University and a master’s degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She came to Collin College to work toward her teaching certificate.

She teaches ninth and 10th grade biology at Vines High School in Plano.

“I love science and I love the kids,” Reichenberger, 29, said. “Teaching is incredibly rewarding and the students are wonderful.”

The Teacher Certification Program began in 2000. The program graduated 88 students this year and is creating a day program -- in addition to its night and weekend courses -- to target high-need certification areas such as math, science and Spanish.
