Scholar to Speak on Virtue

October 2, 2007 - Dr. May Sim will explore Eastern and Western ideas regarding human excellence at a lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Collin College Spring Creek Campus Conference Center, 2800 Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. The lecture, "Cultivating Virtue with Confucius and Aristotle," is free and open to the public.

Dr. Sim received her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University and is an associate professor of philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross.

Dr. Sim is an expert on the philosophies of Confucius and Aristotle. She is the contributing editor of The Crossroads of Norm and Nature: Essays on Aristotle's Ethics and Metaphysics and From Puzzles to Principles?: Essays on Aristotle's Dialectic. Her most recent research projects include "Confucian Rights of Practice," "The Question of Being, Non-Being and 'Creation Ex Nihilo' in Chinese Philosophy," "Is the Liezi an Encheiridion?" and "Being and Unity in the Metaphysics and Ethics of Aristotle, Liezi and Zhu Xi." She also published a book, Remastering Morals with Aristotle and Confucius.

Dr. Sim's presentation is part of a series of public lectures and dialogues titled Extending the Convivencia. The title is a reference to a medieval time when Jews, Christians and Muslims lived in relative peace while engaging each other in civil but spirited debate around fundamental questions.

The series seeks to include speakers representing the full range of religious traditions in the Collin County community. Past speakers have included Islamic scholar Dr. Yusif Kavakci and Rabbi Jordan Parr of the Collin County Jewish congregation Adat Chaverim.
