GDRA Awards Sears $5,000 Scholarship, To Be Used For The Collin College Culinary Arts Program

August 6, 2008 – The Greater Dallas Restaurant Association recently awarded former Allen High School student Ashley Sears with a $5,000 scholarship, which she'll use to attend the Collin College Culinary Arts program.

Sears, whose dream is to become a Pastry Chef, studied culinary arts in specialized Tech Prep classes in high school and can transfer those credits to Collin College.

“The Tech Prep classes I took were great,” Sears said. “They gave me a new passion for cooking and a great start for college.” Tech Prep courses give high school students marketable skills and a chance to explore career interests. Business and industry in the North Texas region need employees with education in technical areas and these courses are designed to begin that education.

The Global EDGE Tech Prep Consortium is a partnership between Collin College , area high schools and local businesses to help students prepare for careers in today's high-demand, high-skilled and high-wage occupations.

After taking Tech Prep courses in high school, students may enroll at Collin College and petition to have their tuition free credits put on to their college transcript. Current Tech Prep programs at Collin College include: hospitality and food service management, child development, computer-aided drafting and design (CADD), computer information systems, computer networking technology, convergence technology, criminal justice, computer programming, E-business media, electronic technology and electronic engineering technology, information systems cybersecurity, interior and architectural design, marketing and office systems technology.
