Collin College President Receives Plano Honor

June 29, 2009 – Collin College President Cary Israel was recently awarded the Special Award of Merit from the Plano Chamber of Commerce.

The prestigious honor is periodically bestowed upon an individual or group that has “gone beyond the call of duty” toward the promotion and improvement of the city of Plano.

Israel is just the 15th recipient of the award since its inception nearly 35 years ago. Past winners include: E.A. Sigler (1975), B.B. Carpenter (1980), Dr. George Apple (1983), Mary Alice Skaggs (1983), A.R. “Alex” Schell III (1986), David Griffin (1989), Dr. Myrtle Hightower (1993), John Clark (1994), Joe Collins (1996), Dr. Allan DeVilleneuve (1997), Linda Johnston (1999), Ben Thomas (2004), Junior League of Plano (2005) and Community of Plano (2006).

President Israel is very active in the community. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Medical Center of Plano as well as the Advisory Council for the Center for Community College Education of Texas A&M University-Commerce, The University of North Texas Bill Priest Center Advisory Board, Plano Symphony Board, Plano Chamber of Commerce Advisory Board, and the Plano Rotary Club.

He joined Collin College as president in September 1999. Since his arrival, the college has consistently gained national recognition in academics, instruction and student success.

Collin College serves more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
