Collin College’s Real Estate, Nursing, Child Development Programs Earn ‘Exemplary’ Rating

July 16, 2009 – Collin College’s Real Estate, Nursing and Child Development programs were recently designated “exemplary” by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The Real Estate and Nursing programs have received the THECB’s prestigious honor, awarded every four years, for a third and second time in a row, respectively.

“Being an ‘exemplary’ program assures the student of a high quality educational experience that prepares the student to pass the state test and for success in the business world,” Mary Milford, Collin College’s real estate department chair. “We have a very active industry-driven advisory board that continually oversees the quality of our program.”

The Child Development program has earned the honor twice.

"Our commitment to the students, faculty and community drives us to reach excellence,” Elaine Wilkinson, academic chair of child development and education,” said, “and they deserve the very best program that the state allows."

For a program to be designated “exemplary,” according to the THECB it must satisfy all program standards specified in the desk review institutional effectiveness evaluation instrument.

The program also must exceed standards in at least five of the following areas: placement of program graduates; license examination pass rate; professional program credentials; linkages and external agreements; business and industry partnerships; integrating academic and technical education; employer and student satisfaction with the program and the determination of an on-going need for the program.

“The exemplary status verifies the high quality of the program and its efforts,” Dr. Nell Ard, Collin College’s director of nursing, said. “It also verifies the quality of the graduates that are produced.”

Collin College serves more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
