Collin College Students Andrew Kohut, Shirin Tavakoli Named 2010 Coca-Cola Scholars

April 21, 2010 – Collin College students, Phi Theta Kappa members and Plano residents Andrew Kohut and Shirin Tavakoli were recently selected as 2010 Coca-Cola Scholars.

Tavakoli was named a Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar while Kohut is a Coca-Cola Finalist.

“I was extremely happy to receive the scholarship because I know I am one step closer to furthering my education,” Kohut, a sophomore on schedule to graduate this summer with associate degrees in Computer Information Systems and General Studies, said. “Collin College has provided an excellent opportunity for me to excel in my desired field of study and further develop a lifelong network. Receiving the Coca-Cola scholarship helps me to manage my rent, utilities, transportation and book expenses when I transfer to The University of Texas at Dallas.”

As a Coca-Cola Scholar, both Kohut and Tavakoli will receive $1,000 scholarships.

“I was honored when learning I was selected as a 2010 Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar. I felt that my hard work and dedication paid off,” Tavakoli, a sophomore who plans to transfer to Southern Methodist University, said. “Collin College offers so many academic and leadership opportunities that are available to all students. The support of the college leadership, as well as qualified and outstanding faculty and staff, played a huge role in my academic and leadership accomplishments. I owe my success to the stakeholders of Collin College.”

Selection as a Coca-Cola Scholar is based on scores earned in the All-USA Academic Team Competition. The program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by PTK Honor Society, which is hosting its 92nd annual convention from April 8-10 in Orlando, Fla.

Collin College serves about 46,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
