New District Senior VP To Join Collin College

July 27, 2010 – Following a nationwide search, Collin College announced this week that Dr. Colleen Altaffer Smith has been selected as the district senior vice president of academic affairs and student development. The position, which is new to the north Texas community college, is a result of record-setting growth.

Dr. Smith is a seasoned higher education professional with nearly 30 years in teaching and administration. She currently is president of Cisco College, and her extensive experience includes service as a vice president of instruction, an associate dean, a divisional chair and a professor.

“Dr. Smith brings a wealth of knowledge to ensure that our academic outcomes and strategic goals are not just met but exceeded,” said Brenda Goodell, who chairs the Collin College board of trustees. “Dr. Smith’s leadership will be a tremendous asset as the district continues to grow.”

The senior vice president will oversee academic affairs and student development for the entire district, which has seen annual student enrollment grow by more than 50 percent in 10 years.

According to the college president, Cary Israel, “Dr. Smith is an accomplished speaker on topics such as assessment, academic leadership and improving student learning. She has presented at numerous national conferences and has served as a consultant in assessment of student learning across the United States and in Canada. We are delighted to have a scholar and noted expert of her caliber leading academic affairs and student development.”

Dr. Smith earned her Ph.D. from Texas Woman’s University. She holds both a Master of Science degree and a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She is active in the Texas Association of Community Colleges and the Texas Community College Teachers Association.
