Collin College’s Sail Program Schedules June Events

May 23, 2011 – Thought-provoking discussions, storytelling, games, movies and more. Participants in this year’s Collin College Seniors Active in Learning summer program will have plenty of activities to choose from during June.

The following activities – sponsored by Collin College’s Continuing Education – are free and meet at Collin College’s Courtyard Center for Professional and Economic Development, 4800 Preston Park Blvd. in Plano, unless otherwise noted.

    Book Discussion Group: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
          • June 6 – “The Cellist of Sarajevo” by Steven Galloway
          • June 20 – “Olive Kitteridge” by Elizabeth Strout
    Afternoon at the Movies: 12:30-3 p.m., June 6-June 27. Movies begin at 1 p.m. The first movie will be “The Kings Speech” starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. The remaining selections will be announced at the first class meeting.
    Mah Jongg: 9:30-11:30 a.m., June 7-June 28 – Students should already know the rules of the game; some recent experience is desirable.

    Potpourri: 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m., June 7-21
          • June 7 – Notorious Radio Broadcasters of World War II: Take a look back at Lord Haw-   Haw, Axis Sally, Tokyo Rose and other well-known broadcasters for the Axis powers.
          • June 14 – Wonders of the World: The Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, the New Wonders and other modern and “forgotten” wonders will be discussed.
          • June 21 – Language of Flowers: Learn why you should not give lime blossoms to someone with whom you want to remain friends.

    Genesis: 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m. June 28 – Dr. Prager will look at how rabbinic commentary attempted to amplify and explain the Biblical text.

    History Movie Series: 1-3:30 p.m., June 7-June 28
          • June 7 – “We Were Soldiers”
          • June 14 – “Fair Game”        
          • June 21 and June 28 – “Gettysburg I and II”
    History Series: 1-3 p.m., June 8-June 29
          • June 8 – “1918”
          • June 15 – “Winston Churchill: Armchair General”
          • June 22 – “Making of the Constitution”
          • June 29 – “The Confederacy’s Last Invasion of the North”
    Subconscious Storytelling: 1-2:30 p.m., June 16 and June 30 (writers are encouraged to explore the unconscious elements of story crafting.)
    Watercolor Sketch Crawl: 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., June 11, June 18 and June 25 (Registration is required. To register, call 972.985.3788.)
