New Program Studies Sleep Disorders

Polysomnographic Technology starts at Collin College fall 2012

January 17, 2012 – Sleep is a basic necessity for life and mind, but so many do not get the sleep that they need.

More than 60 million Americans struggle with at least one of more than 70 known sleep disorders – including sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy.

Polysomnographic technologists are at the forefront of this area of medicine, as they conduct the sleep studies that allow physicians to diagnose and treat patients suffering from sleep disorders.

Starting in fall 2012, Collin College will offer a Polysomnographic Technology program. The program will prepare individuals for an allied health specialty in the clinical care and management of sleep disorders.

The Polysomnographic Technology program offers two degree tracks depending on the student’s healthcare background. The 22-month associate of applied science degree track is for those without a healthcare background and totals 67 credit hours. Prerequisites include Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Basic Health Profession Skills.

The certificate track is for individuals who are board registered in respiratory care, nursing, electroencephalography or physician assistant and wish to pick up additional certification in polysomnography. The certificate track is also open to board registered polysomnographic technologists who were on-the-job trained and wish to pursue a formal education in polysomnography.

Currently, the program is accepting 10-15 students every fall semester in each degree track.
