The Arts Gallery Schedules 'In The Spirit Of The Moment: A Mixed-Media Installation'
Nov. 12, 2012 – THE ARTS gallery at Collin College’s Spring Creek Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, in Plano, is scheduled to host a solo exhibition by Collin College Art Professor Jerry Smith entitled “In the Spirit of the Moment: A Mixed-Media Installation.”
The exhibition will run from Monday, Nov. 26 through Saturday, Dec. 15. A reception will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5 with gallery talks at 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
Gallery hours are from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.
Professor Smith is an award-winning artist whose works have been exhibited nationwide and in one-man shows and group exhibitions in Texas. Smith, who teaches painting, drawing and art appreciation, often combines art forms with multimedia installations and assemblages with a variety of found and created objects.
Text is sometimes included in his works, creating wordplay and a dialog between the mind and the eye. Professor Smith’s artworks often express sarcastic wit intertwined with social commentary and artistic skill.
“Jerry Smith's works address the polemics swirling around contentious social issues and then explore the resulting dualities and paradoxes,” Michael Golden, Central Art Gallery director, said of Smith’s recent exhibition in Houston. “Those dualities abound in the gallery’s two rooms, where paintings erupt into sculpture and assembled objects, phone poles, weather vanes and yard sticks merge into paintings. In this particular exhibit, Smith examines the pop culture drive to reduce traditional iconography to paint by number kitsch, even as it elevates images of the maudlin.”
