Collin College Announces Evening of Latin Jazz

Oct. 22, 2013–A perfect combination of music and culture, Collin College’s Department of Music will present “Caliente!” an evening of Latin Jazz at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the John Anthony Theatre on the Spring Creek Campus in Plano, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway.

Collin College’s Latin Jazz Ensemble and The Texas Instruments Jazz Band will both perform. Tickets will be available at the door, and are $5 for general admission and free for Collin College students.

The Latin Jazz Ensemble is an award-winning jazz performance ensemble at Collin College.  The group has performed at festivals throughout the U.S. and is scheduled to perform at the prestigious Jazz Education Network Conference in January 2014.

The Texas Instruments Jazz Band is a full 18-piece big band consisting of saxes, trombones, trumpets and a rhythm section.  The band is organized through the Texins Association of Texas Instruments.   The group has performed at Artfest, Montage, the Meyerson Symphony Center, the Starplex Amphitheater, the Loyola University Jazz Festival and the Texas State Jazz Festival. The band also performed at the world renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in July 2000.

Selections of music for the evening include such artist as Poncho Sanchez, Oscar Hernandez, Roland Vasquez, Bobby Matos, Humberto Ramirez, as well as Latin arrangements of selections from Wayne Shorter, Don Grolnick and Mulgrew Miller.
