Collin College Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr.
Jan. 22, 2014 – Collin College partnered with the local community Saturday to celebrate the legacy of civil rights advocate Martin Luther King, Jr. through a power breakfast, featuring dialogue with elected officials and community leaders as well as a student documentary and presentation.

As part of the event, $1,000 student scholarships were awarded to Michelle Davis of Allen and M’Banna Kantako and Alexa Acosta of Plano for their commitment to academic excellence and community involvement, as it relates to the values of unity and equality.
Kantako is the president of the Black Student Association at Collin College and produced the documentary shown at the power breakfast. He plans to transfer to The University of Texas at Austin and major in international law. Ultimately, Kantako aspires to work for the United Nations.
Davis, who plans to transfer to Southern Methodist University (SMU) and major in accounting before attending law school to become a tax attorney, worked on the narrative for the event’s student presentation. She is currently president of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Collin College and has served as a student government senator and active member in Political Science Club and the award-winning mock trial team. Davis was named an Emerging Scholar in accounting and government.
Acosta, who plans to transfer to SMU and major in marketing and business, acted as the leader for a student service project. She is the vice president of leadership for PTK at Collin College and a member of Lion’s Club and the League of United Latin American Citizens.
Collin College serves nearly 53,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degrees and certificates in a wide range of disciplines. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.
