"In the Heights" Opens at Collin Theatre Center
February 14, 2013 - “In The Heights”, a musical journey telling the universal story of life, will be performed Feb. 27- March 9 at the Collin College Spring Creek Campus John Anthony Theatre, 2800 E. Spring Creek Pkwy.
Audiences will be taken on a journey to a vibrant Manhattan neighborhood on the brink of change, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you and which you leave behind. The John Anthony Theatre will be transformed into Washington Heights, where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of life.
Director Brad Baker said he first saw “In The Heights” with a group of Collin College students in a small, off-Broadway theatre and was not prepared for the emotional response to the show.
“The music – salsa and rap, mixed with classic Broadway – and the dancing (jazz and hip-hop) made this simple story feel vibrant and original,” Baker said. “The story of the value of community and family resonated with me and my students. ‘In The Heights’ is a beautiful and moving musical that reminds us that our daily lives matter, and that our friends and family are most important.”
The production was written by Quiara Alegia Hudes, with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
