College Named to Presidential Community Service Honor Roll

June 9, 2015 – Collin College has been named to the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support service learning and volunteerism programs and raise the visibility of campus community partnerships.

The college was recognized in the General Community Service, Economic Opportunity and Education categories.

Collin College has been named to the honor roll four times and was a finalist for the Presidential Award in 2013, the highest federal recognition an institution can receive for its commitment to community, service-learning and civic engagement. The program is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

“Service and higher education go hand in hand,” CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer said. “These schools are inspiring young leaders to roll up their sleeves and work alongside community members to solve problems.”

Dr. Terry Hockenbrough, director of the Collin College Center for Scholarly and Civic Engagement, said service learning and volunteerism are ways Collin College gives back.

“Our students, faculty and partners continue to collaborate on robust academically-based service projects,” Dr. Hockenbrough said. “As a result of this collaboration, our community continues to benefit. We are proud of their commitment and the impact they are having across Collin County. Service Learning is indicative of our college’s core values and will remain a powerful way of teaching at Collin College.”
