College Milestones

The Health Sciences Academy operated jointly by Collin College and Plano ISD has been awarded a Texas Association of College Technical Educators Award of Excellence. The award recognizes college programs that demonstrate: innovative partnerships and collaborations with employers, community stakeholders or other educational institutions; potential for positive economic impact in their region; outstanding program outcomes (such as graduation, placement, licensure pass rates, etc.); and/or best practices in workforce education and training that have improved student success.

The college marked its 31st anniversary April 6 and celebrated with a week of events, including games, trivia, the raising of new Collin College flags, and the dedication of a tree in the memory of Founding Trustee Tino Trujillo. The week culminated in the first-ever CougarRun 5K and Fun Run, organized by the Collin College Foundation. The CougarRun attracted about 200 runners and raised more than $20,000 in scholarships for students. Pictures of the event are available on the Collin College Alumni Facebook page .

Collin College’s Respiratory Care program has received the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) Distinguished RRT Credentialing Success Award for the fourth year in a row. The award recognizes criteria including positive job placement and credentialing success of 90 percent or above. From a program effectiveness perspective, the CoARC views the RRT credential as a measure of a program’s success in inspiring its graduates to achieve their highest educational and professional aspirations.

Open Doors, Open Minds presented “The Invisible Scarlet Letter: Barriers to Building a New Life After Crime” on April 14.  Sara Mokuria, an associate director of the University of Texas at Dallas Center for Urban Policy Research, spoke about the challenges faced by persons formerly incarcerated and the difficulties they try to overcome finding housing, jobs and rebuilding relationships. More than 90 students attended.
