About the Writing Center

Consultants at the Writing Center work with students individually in conference to help them address their various composition problems, such as formulating thesis statements and claims, organizing ideas, developing unified paragraphs, using topic sentences to advantage, learning to recognize and correct problems in grammar and mechanics, documenting to avoid plagiarism, and learning how to improve their prose style.

Students must bring a copy of the assignment instructions, along with a printed copy of their draft. If the students are uncertain how to begin the paper, the consultant can often help them generate ideas and a strategy for developing the paper. In addition to college compositions, consultants can also help students with college scholarship essays and letters of application.

Collin College CPC Writing Center consultants will assist students in learning how to:
  • Understand the assignment and professor’s expectations.
  • Brainstorm, plan, and/or organize ideas for a writing assignment.
  • Construct a thesis statement, topic sentence, or determine the focus of the paper.
  • Develop and connect supporting ideas to the main idea or thesis statement.
  • Apply proper citation methods for MLA, APA, or Chicago.
  • Take ownership of the paper and the ideas contained in the paper.
  • Develop the ability to revise independently.

Writing Center consultants will not write papers for students, proofread or edit papers, judge papers according to grade, or guarantee a quick “fix” for students' writing problems.

CPC Writing Center is now scheduling appointments ONLINE. Students must follow the link below using their Collin College Cougarmail.Collin.edu email address.
