Collin College and the U.S. Department of Education (through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act) are teaming up to help meet the needs of our students during this difficult time.
We are working on two specific efforts to assist our students: grants direct-to-students and a course re-take credit.
♦ Direct-to-student grants
Note: All funds for the CARES Act Emergency Grant have been expended.
We are excited to share details about the CARES Act student grants that Collin College administered. Collin College has signed and submitted a Certification and Agreement with the Department of Education to accept CARES Act funding. The total award is $10,790,400 and no less than 50% of the funds will be provided directly to students in the form of emergency grants.
As of September 1, 2020, Collin College has awarded $5,395,456 to 6,791 students who were enrolled in the Spring 2020 semester. We estimate that approximately 15,500 students could have been eligible to receive the grant.
Collin College adopted a two-phase approach to distributing funds to students. The first phase resulted in automatic awards to our most needy students as identified by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Each student with an expected family contribution of $16,000 and less received a grant of $800.
The second phase allowed any eligible student to apply for the remaining funds through an internal application process. The application was located in CougarWeb Financial Aid by selecting the "Emergency Grant Assistance" menu item. Completion of the FAFSA was a requirement of the application.
Students were able to receive up to $800 in emergency grant funds. The funds that are not automatically awarded are reviewed by a committee which has been established to review all CARES Act emergency grant requests.
The following information was provided to all students who could have potentially been eligible for the emergency grant funds:
Collin College has received Emergency Grant Assistance funding directly from the Department of Education. The Emergency Grant Assistance funds will be used to help students who have been financially impacted by COVID-19. We encourage students who are in need to complete an application for the Emergency Grant Assistance. The approved applicants will receive up to assist with living expenses during this difficult time. You must be a student in the current Spring semester in order to apply.
To complete the application, please sign in to CougarWeb and click on “My Financial Aid” under the Student QuickLinks. Once you are in the Financial Aid section, select “Emergency Grant Assistance” and answer the five questions. Make sure you click on the submit button to send the application.
Emergency grants will not need to be paid back and are designed to support our students during this difficult time. Approved applications will be awarded in the order they are received while funding lasts, so apply now. Notification of awards will be sent to your Collin College email account.
♦ Withdrawal Course Tuition Credit
Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the spring of 2020, all Collin College's academic course offerings were moved fully online. This significant change to delivery of instruction and abrupt modification of campus operations may have resulted in students choosing to withdraw from one or more courses. The Tuition Credit provides students who withdrew from a course in the spring semester after March 13, 2020 the chance for retaking the same course again with financial assistance. The credit will cover the tuition and student activity fees for retaking the same course in its entirety either in summer or fall 2020, although exceptions can be made by the application review committee when it is deemed to be the most appropriate for the students' academic progression.
What is a Tuition Credit? If your tuition is calculated as an in-county student, you currently pay $52 per credit hour and a $2 per credit hour Student Activity Fee. If you are repeating a 3-hour course, your cost is $54 x 3 hours = $162. If you are awarded a tuition credit, Collin College would put a $162 credit on your Collin College account. You would still be responsible for any additional lab or special course fees and textbooks. Texas residents, outside of Collin County would get a credit equal to $100 per credit hour. Out of state residents would get a credit equal to $167 per credit hour.
