Clinical Medical Assistant

The Clinical Medical Assistant certificate series will train students through lectures, hands-on activities, skills assessments, and mock scenarios. 
 
  • Help the physician with patient examinations
  • Take patients' histories and measure vital signs
  • Give patient injections as directed by the physician
  • Schedule patient appointments
  • Prepare blood for laboratory tests
  • Practice within the standard of care for a Medical Assistant
  • Perform first aid procedures
  • Prepare a patient for procedures and treatments
  • Maintain medication, vaccine, and immunization records
  • Perform electrocardiography and obtain a 12-lead ECG
  • Assist with minor surgery and suturing
  • Comply with local, state, and federal privacy standards

 

Steps to Enroll:

CMA Training Pre-Admission Application

  1. complete the CMA Training Pre-Admission Application and email to cehealthcare@collin.edu  
  2. Individuals will be selected to meet via Zoom for an interview with the Program Manager.
    Selected individuals will be notified via email once authorization to enroll has been granted.
  3. Register as a continuing education student by following the Steps to Registration below.

CMA students are to complete Electronic Health Records and Health Career Success either before or while enrolled in their CMA courses.  All students are to be ready to begin the 160 hour externship by the end of their CMA courses.

Clinical Medical Assistant Externship
Course Number: MDCA 2063
Hours: 160
Fee: $749 (Fee includes NHA review course and CCMA certification exam)

Students are required to complete a 160 hour externship after successfull completion of CMA courses.  All students must apply to externship within 30 days of the last of their CMA courses.  Electronic Health Records and Health Career Success must also be completed prior to applying to externship.  Students are encouraged to work 40 hours per week while at externship.  Additional information regarding externship is available on the Externship webpage.  Do not plan to travel until the 160 hour externship is complete. Previous college credit, transcripts, or past diplomas are NOT required in order to obtain approval into the course.  
Financial aid is available for approved students to apply funds to their tuition.  Please apply through the link in Step 1 below.  Financial aid may need additional documentation in order to qualify.  Email cefinancialaid@collin.edu with any questions regarding financial aid.
A certificate of completion will be awarded after successful completion of the courses and the externship. Graduates are also qualified for certification as a Medical Assistant, which is available through the National Healthcareer Association.
