Foster Care Resources

Fostering Success at Collin College

We are currently developing a foster and adoptive support program called Fostering Success at Collin College, and we would like your help designing it!

We would also like to check in with you to be sure you have all of the support you need as a current student. In exchange for your time and making strong grades this semester, we would like to offer a one-time $250 tuition and fee credit to foster care and adopted (via foster care) students that would be applied to your account in Spring 2022, pending you take at least 6 credit hours and meet the below requirements.

1) Meeting with one of us in-person or VIA Zoom for a 20-minute meeting and/or

2) Attending one of our brainstorming sessions to design the program at Collin AND

3) If you earn a 2.5 GPA this Fall semester

If you’re interested in participating, please contact Susan Karlsen or Kasey McKee via email (see below) and let us know how you will participate and what times/dates would be best for a meeting or group brainstorming session during the Fall semester. One of us will follow up with a phone call as well.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Susan Karlsen         Email Susan at: skarlsen@collin.edu          972-881-5750           Plano Campus - G117

Susan Karlsen completed a program at the Utah College of Massage Therapy, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business with a concentration in Human Resource Management from the University of Phoenix. Susan felt a strong connection to healing as well as higher education, so she worked part time as a massage therapist and full time at the Steiner Education Group, where she was able to open new campuses in Arizona, Colorado and finally in Texas. Susan ultimately decided to resign from her position as Campus Director in February 2013 to become a foster parent in Texas. After completing the foster parent licensing and certification process, Susan started working at Collin College in February 2014 in the Financial Aid department, where she is able to help students attain the funding and benefits needed to complete their educational goals. Susan and her husband fostered 16 children over a period of 8 years, and adopted their son and daughter in April 2021. Susan still maintains relationships with most of the children and their families, and holds a current foster license to provide respite care for emergency situations. Susan was selected to be the Foster Care Liaison for Collin College, and is extremely passionate about continuing to help this particular group of students to utilize the available resources, achieve their educational goals at Collin College, and to instill fostering success for their future.
