Collin College Music Ensembles

Ensembles Available Fall 2018

Check with individual directors for audition music and requirements. All Collin College ensembles are "Lab required" courses, meaning, they meet for three contact (aka rehearsal) hours per week and students earn one credit hour. Prerequisite for most ensembles is an Audition.
 

Large Instrumental Ensembles

MUEN 1121 - Jazz Lab Band
Participation in a large band concentrating on jazz and commercial music performance styles. Consisting of 16-21 instrumentalists and one vocalist, the band performs both traditional and contemporary jazz literature. MUEN 1122 - Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The Collin College Wind Symphony focuses on the study and performance of traditional and contemporary symphonic wind band literature.  The ensemble is open to all Collin College students with performance experience in concert or marching band settings.  Basic instrumental proficiency is required.  Students participate in weekly rehearsals and perform on scheduled concerts.  No audition is required to enroll in the course, but the director will hear students individually for part assignments.  Students are encouraged to prepare a short solo or etude that demonstrates their strengths.  For more information.  Contact: Dr. Garry Evans gevans@collin.edu

Small Instrumental Ensembles


MUEN 1131 - New Music Ensemble
Performs experimental, avant garde, electronic, and contemporary music for mixed media ensemble including compositions by student composers. No Audition required at this time.  Contact: Dr. Christopher Morgan cmorgan@collin.edu
 
MUEN 1132 - Keyboard Ensemble
Traditional piano literature for multiple performers and arrangements for electronic keyboard ensemble. Several performances each semester.  Contact: Dr. Brian Allison ballison@collin.edu
  
MUEN 1135 - Expressions Combo
A small ensemble (4-6) of musicians who serve as the rhythm selection for the Expressions Vocal Jazz ensemble. In addition to rehearsing and performing with Expressions, the combo also prepares its own arrangements and performs as an independent ensemble. Typical repertoire includes bebop, Latin, and fusion standards. This ensemble may have several performances each semester. MUEN 1136 - Harp Ensemble
This is a study and performance of traditional and contemporary symphonic harp ensemble literature. Students participate in weekly rehearsals and perform on scheduled concerts. Basic instrumental proficiency is required.  Contact: Dr. Garry Evans gevans@collin.edu
  
MUEN 1137 - Guitar Ensemble

MUEN 1139 - String Ensemble

MUEN 1140 - Jazz Combo
Examples of small instrumental ensembles may include but are not limited to wind, string, percussion, piano, and mixed ensembles in various styles. Additionally, participation in a small jazz ensemble concentrating on jazz and commercial music performance styles. Ensemble consists of 4-9 instrumental / vocal members. MUEN 1142 - Expressions Vocal Jazz Ensemble
Expressions vocal jazz group is a select group of 10-16 singers performing varying styles of jazz including blues, swing, latin, bebop along with contemporary arrangements by popular jazz artists.  In addition to singing acapella, they also perform in conjunction with their jazz combo.Expressions has several performances each semester.  Contact: Kathy Morgan kmorgan@collin.edu
 

MUEN 1151 - A Capella Pop Group [aka OneSound]
This select only a capella group, OneSound, is one of Collin’s newer vocal groups.  The group consists of 9-18 singers plus vocal percussionists aka beatboxers.  OneSound performs their own arrangements as well as covers of current pop, jazz, and other contemporary music.  They have competed in the International Collegiate Competition of A Capella (ICCA) for the past two years.  They are the only Texas two-year colleges that has competed (placing 4th and 5th our of the 10 colleges/universities.  There are several performances on and off campus each semester.  To audition, email the director a video of you performing a pop song (or two) of your choice. MUEN 1152 - Opera Theatre Ensemble
This is a study of opera through performances of scenes and full productions. Emphasis is placed on the musical and dramatic qualities of performance, preparation of character, and aspects of language diction from the selected production. MUEN 1153 - Chamber Choir
Chamber choir is a select audition-only choir devoted to performance of an eclectic repertory of choral literature for mixed voices (S.A.T.B.) at the advanced collegiate level. Concert repertoire varies from themed programs such as “Madrigals: Then and Now” “Romantic Choral music” and “Shakespeare settings” as well as larger choral works such as Orff’s Carmina Burana and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony both performed at Collin and with Irving Symphony under the direction of Maestro Guzman. In addition, the group has performed and acted as the chorus in Collin’s production of Bizet’s Carmen. Contact: Kathy Morgan kmorgan@collin.edu
