Program Purpose

Exempts certain paramedics from paying tuition and laboratory fees for eligible emergency medical services courses at public institutions of higher education.

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be employed as a paramedic by a political subdivision of this state
  • Hold an EMT-Paramedic certification or Paramedic license issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services
  • Are enrolled as an undergraduate in an undergraduate program, including certificate, associate and baccalaureate degrees leading to an emergency medical services certificate or degree

    At Collin College, the approved degree programs consist of the following:
    • AAS – Emergency Medical Services Professions
    • Level 1 Certificate – Paramedic

  • Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost
  • To receive a continuation award, the student must meet the institution's financial aid satisfactory academic progress (SAP) requirements. Specifically, students must maintain a financial aid GPA of at least a 2.0 to remain eligible. (Financial aid GPA includes grades for developmental courses.)
  • In addition, students cannot be reported by the institution as being in excessive hours according to Education Code 54.014.

 

Note: SAP is run at the end of each semester.

 

Award Amount

Tuition and laboratory fees for courses as part of an emergency medical services curriculum which pertain to the major requirements of the identified programs are eligible for reimbursement.

 

Application Process

Each semester, provide the financial aid office proof of employment as a paid paramedic and proof of certification or licensure, and enroll in the courses of a paramedic curriculum as noted above.The letter of employment must always have a current date and cannot be just a copy of an older letter.

Important: Please realize that each subsequent semester, your exemption may be posted prior to SAP running for that semester. If, upon the SAP program running, you are not meeting the SAP requirements, the exemption will be removed from your account and you will be responsible for paying your tuition and fees out-of-pocket.
