Professor Emeritus Program

Professor Emeritus Program

The Professor Emeritus Program honors the exceptional contributions of faculty members who have committed a significant portion of their career to Collin College and its students and provides an avenue to continue benefiting from their expertise.  Professors emeriti benefit Collin College by being available for college service, serving as ambassadors for the college within the community, mentoring new faculty members, participating in college activities and ceremonies (graduation, pinnings, etc.), or helping and inspiring students, as well as teaching on a part-time basis, when available.

Eligibility

The Professor Emeritus candidate must meet the following qualifications:

  • Employed as full-time faculty at Collin College for at least ten (10) years
  • Retired from Collin College
  • The faculty member’s most recent faculty contract was a multi-year contract and, if applicable, the Council on Excellence identified the faculty member as meeting standards of excellence as a part of their peer review process in the faculty member's most recent review
  • Faculty member consistently upheld the college’s Core Values
  • Have demonstrable accomplishments of excellence in teaching, service, and professional development as a full-time faculty at Collin College

Stage 1: Nomination Process

On a rolling basis throughout the academic year:

  • Any Collin College staff or faculty may submit nominations of former faculty to be considered for Professor Emeritus status.
  • Nominations should be made through submission of a completed Professor Emeritus nomination form, found on the Council on Excellence and the HR website: Professor Emeritus nomination form.
  • Nomination forms are electronically submitted via the webpage. These nominations get sent directly to a Campus Provost.
  • After approval by a Campus Provost, the nomination will be forwarded to an HR representative to verify eligibility.
  • For nominees whose employment-related eligibility are verified, the executive assistant of the EVP will pull the two most recent Collin College Board Reports of the nominee.
  • In the event that a nominee is not eligible, HR will inform the Campus Provost and the EVP.
  • The executive assistant of the EVP will ensure that the nomination materials are available as PDFs in the I:/drive Professor Emeritus folder and notify the Review Committee Chair. The Review Committee Chair will notify the review committee (See Stage 3) of nomination(s) available for review.
  • The executive assistant of the EVP maintains a spreadsheet on the I:/drive in the Professor Emeritus folder that shows each step of the process, including when each person is approved (or denied) by each approver.

Stage 2: Review of Nominations

Review of Professor Emeritus materials will be performed on a rolling basis during the fall and spring semesters of each academic year.

  • Summer nominations will be considered in the Fall semester.
  • Review of nominations will be completed by the Professor Emeritus Review Committee.
  • The Review Committee Chair routes the nomination materials to the Professor Emeritus Review Committee via email.
  • Committee members will individually review the Professor Emeritus nomination materials and either Recommend (R) or Discuss (D) the nominee for Professor Emeritus status.
  • Committee members will email their recommendations (R or D) via a private email to the Review Committee Chair within two weeks of receiving the review request. Should a committee member need to abstain from participating in the review of a nominee, the CoE Chair may serve as a reviewer or appoint an alternate reviewer from CoE membership.
  • If a nominee receives unanimous approval, the Review Committee Chair will inform the COE Chair. If a nominee does not receive unanimous approval, the nominee will be placed on the agenda for one of the end-of-semester Professor Emeritus Committee Review Meetings to discuss the nomination. A new vote will be taken at the meeting. The rationale for the decision will be included.
  • The Review Committee Chair will inform the CoE Chair of the Review Committee’s recommendation(s), who in turn will notify the EVP and SVP of the recommendation status of all nominees each semester after the review meeting. The fall meeting will be held no later than the second Friday of December; the spring meeting will be held no later than the second Friday of May.  No meeting will occur if there are no nominees who received D votes.
  • The EVP or SVP will discuss the final recommended list with the District President for approval.

Stage 3: Approvals and Announcement of Professor Emeritus Status

  • The District President will review recommended nominations and submit approved nominations to the Board of Trustees.
  • The Board of Trustees will review District President approved nominations in Executive Session and confirm/decline Professor Emeritus status. The Board of Trustees will publicly confer a nomination without the name publicly disclosed.
  • Confirmed individuals will be publicly acknowledged during the corresponding All College Day event in August or in January.
