EMT Program Requirements

 

EMT PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

You may apply at age 17; however, all students must be 18 years old in order to attend clinicals, which is a requirement for all course completions.

 

The EMT Program is a limited admissions program involving a competitive process, and we cap our classes at 24 students per class.

There are different requirements for civilians and Fire Academy students.  Please read below for details on our process before

submitting an application.

 

You are entering into a very detailed-oriented profession.

Your attention to detail starts with this process, so please read this page carefully.


Fire Academy EMT classes:  All Fire Academy students are automatically accepted admission, but must complete the program application (Step 6).

 

Application Process

Step One: 

 

Apply and Get Accepted as a Collin Student

 

You must first apply to and be accepted by Collin College in order to access the EMS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) application. Go to www.collin.edu and select "APPLY” as a CREDIT student (not Continuing Education). Note: only your collin email and password can be used to open and access the EMT application. (see below for application troubleshooting)

 

If you are a current Collin College student or have been a student in the past, make sure you are active in the system as a credit student and can register for your class in its designated class semester by contacting the Admissions office.  

 

Provide the college with all the required documents.  (You will receive an email with a list of required documents for the college after your Collin College application is accepted.)

 

Make sure you select the box for Occupational Skills Award (OSA) in the Intended Academic Goal section. Then, select Emergency Medical Services Professions (OSA_EMED_HE) for your Major-Certificate.

 

Meningitis Vaccination Requirement: Texas State Law requires most new students under the age of 22 entering a higher education institution to show proof of having the vaccine 10 days prior to the start of the term. For more information on this requirement, visit www.collin.edu/meningitis.  Note: The meningitis vaccination is required by Collin College as part of admission to the college.

 

Step Two:

 

Assessment Testing

 

You must complete the Accuplacer Exam before completing the EMT application.

 

Results from the Accuplacer test will be used to make program admissions decisions. Therefore, ALL APPLICANTS, regardless of degrees and/or academic standing, must complete an entrance assessment exam for EMS writing, reading and arithmetic. This test is specifically designed for our EMT Education Program and is not the same as the college entrance exams. You may take this test two times per semester. This test is valid for 12 months for our application purposes. For more information and to take a practice test, visit: https://accuplacer.collegeboard.org/ or https://practice.accuplacer.org/login The minimum acceptable scores are: AccuPlacer WritePlacer (4); Accuplacer Reading (250) and AccuPlacer Arithmetic (250).

TSI Testing: You will not need to take the TSI Assessment if you are only taking our EMT class. You must take the TSI Assessment if you are taking other courses.

 

Step Three:

 

Transcripts

 

Be prepared to attach your unofficial transcripts to the EMT application if you are a civilian applicant that is not in Collin College Fire Academy. Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum of a cumulative/overall 2.0 GPA, no exceptions. Upload all college transcripts. (We do not accept transfer reports from one college to another.) Make certain your transcripts show your GPA or they will not be accepted.

 

FOR NON COLLEGE STUDENTS: Upload a copy of your high school diploma or GED.

NOTE: Fire department and DHS sponsored students are exempt from this requirement. 

 

Step Four:

 

Basic Life Support

 

Admitted students into the program will need to provide American Heart Association proof of BLS certification on the first day of class. Additionally, this card must have an expiration date not less than 12 months from the start of your course.  American Red Cross BLS Provider cards will not be accepted.  If you need to attend a class to obtain an American Heart Association BLS Provider card, please follow the link provided to schedule your class.  LINK: BLS Schedule of Classes

 

Step Five:

 

Clinical Requirements

 

Very Important:  You must be up-to-date on all vaccinations.The Collin College Department of EMS requires a criminal background check as well as tracking for immunization health records. Upon acceptance into the program, students will be required to upload the following clinical readiness documentation before the start of clinical rotations. Proof of immunization records must be from an official medical or government source. Detailed instructions will be provided to you at your mandatory class orientation including deadlines for immunizations set by the Clinical Coordinator.


START NOW! Although the following documentation is required on the first day of class or by clinicals deadline, start now making sure you have met these requirements and have your documents ready to upload. You will only need to upload your CPR certification (if applicable) to the EMT application.

 

Step Six:

 

Complete the EMT Application

 

Once you have submitted your application, you cannot make changes.  If you did not attach the required/applicable documentation, you will need to complete another application. Please call the EMS Department if you need to resubmit your application.

 

Applicants will be emailed AFTER the application deadline date with interview information/time.  Fire Academy students are not required to interview. Communication on next steps will be sent to you via email.

 

Step Seven:

 

Interviews

 

Interviews are held in-person on the McKinney campus and only on the date specified. No Exceptions. After the application deadline date applicants will receive an email with interview information and time slot. You will receive notification of your acceptance or otherwise within 1 week of the interview date.  

 

Application Troubleshooting

 

This is an online application created with Google Forms. You will not need to use a google account or create one to submit your application. This is to allow new incoming Collin College students to fill out the application without a Collin College Email Address.
