Hazardous Material Release
A hazardous material (HAZMAT) is a accidental discharge of a harmful substance that may pose a reasonable risk to health, property, or the environment.
HAZMAT leak or spill. If you are in the area of a spill or leak then:
- Remove yourself from the area, and keep others away.
- Do not walk into or touch any of the spilled substance.
- Try not to inhale gases, fumes and smoke. If possible, cover mouth with a cloth while leaving the area.
- Stay away from the accident victims until the hazardous material has been identified.
- Call the Collin College Police Department (972.578.5555) and provide dispatcher with information about the spill (location, injuries, type of chemicals, amount).
- Advise others to stay out of the immediate area.
- Employees should assist with obtaining information about the material: Safety Data Sheet (SDS), constituents, common use.
HAZMAT release. A major hazardous materials (HAZMAT) release on campus or along the transportation routes in close proximity could require evacuation or sheltering in place of all or part of the campus.
You will receive an CougarAlert on the appropriate action determined by the Incident Commander.
